“Then I was constantly at [the Lord’s] side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence….” –Proverbs 8:30
To be truthful, I’m disappointed Lexi doesn’t want to walk by my side. Before we adopted her, I imagined my faithful dog trotting right at my heels as we roamed leaf-littered sunlit trails. I understand that Lexi wants to explore the world around her, but I don’t want her to be indifferent to me. Finally I realized that Lexi’s loyalty isn’t gauged by her proximity. Even if she’s six feet ahead of me (the length of her chain), we’re walking together. She isn’t trying to get away. When we want to explore the world—meet new people, learn new things, test new ideas—we’re not trying to get away from God, either. We’re not indifferent to his love, his mercy, or his teachings. And as long as we’re walking with God—as long as we’re humble, grateful, compassionate, and obedient—we’re always at his side because he is everywhere, his presence surrounds and fills everything. We can journey far and wide and never be ahead of or behind the Lord. We can’t get away from him, in fact. Like the psalmist, we rejoice in his presence.
Dear God, Thank you that I can always be at your side because you are everywhere and in all things. Amen
