“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” –John 10:10 (English Standard Version)
At the curve of the road stands an apple tree so weighted down with apples that I can’t walk under it. Lexi can, of course. She tries to drag me along with her, but I have to resist (or crawl). It is an unbelievable abundance of apples. This tree illustrates Jesus’s point in John 10:10. He comes not just to give us life, but to give us abundant life: a richer, fuller, more meaningful, more purposeful life than we could have imagined. The Amplified Bible adds, “till it overflows.” We might have been satisfied with four bushels of apples (the average yield of a dwarf apple tree), but Jesus blesses us with 130 metric tons per hectare (a record set in New Zealand in the 1990s). Christ invites us to walk through the gate (John 10:9). Can we do it? Or do we resist? Jesus invites us to walk into abundant life.
Dear God, Show me the way to the abundant, overflowing life you offer. Amen
