Coming Straight Back

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.”  --Jeremiah 24:7

One day when we were walking, Lexi broke away from me to chase a garbage truck. She ran several yards ahead. Then she turned and came straight back to me. She stood still while I rebuckled her harness, and we resumed our walk. I think she was surprised to find herself suddenly untethered. I don’t think she knew what to do once she was free. She came back to me of her own accord because she trusts me. Sometimes we break away from God to chase a false hope. We suddenly find ourselves untethered. We think we’re free, but we’re really adrift. Like Lexi, we can turn and come straight back to God. He gives us a heart to know him. We return to him with all our heart because we trust him. Then we resume our walk.

Dear God, When I break loose, give me a heart to return to you. Amen
