Running Away

“But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.” –Jonah 1:3a

Once or twice Lexi has broken away from me while we were walking. She lunged and pulled hard enough that she yanked the leash right out of my hand. But she never tried to run away. I don’t think she realized that she could outrun me. Jonah, on the other hand, tried to run away from the Lord. He thought he could outrun God. But there’s no fleeing from the Almighty. Like Lexi, we might as well not try. Yes, Lexi sometimes strains at the leash, trying to go her own way. Sometimes we strain against God’s commands. Maybe we even break (away from) them. But there’s nowhere to go. When Lexi breaks loose, I pick up her leash. She wants to keep walking. Likewise, we Christians keep walking with God.

Dear God, Teach me not to run away but to keep walking with you. Amen
