In Love

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” –Romans 5:8

It took me a long time to love Lexi. I didn’t hang in there because she’d stolen my heart. Her big brown eyes didn’t melt my soul. I looked at her and only felt despair. She was a disappointment and a constant source of anxiety and frustration. It was some kind of fragile hope and a wavering faith that stopped me from returning her to the Humane Society. The love came later. God’s love, on the other hand, comes first. He loved us before we even knew him. He loved us before we repented. He loved us before we changed a single thing about our lives. He loved us before we even loved ourselves. We can’t disappoint him or fail him so terribly that he ever stops loving us. Even when we’re full of anger or hate, he still loves us. God’s love came first and will be with us to the last. We can know and rely on God’s love (1 John 4:16).

Dear God, Thank you for loving me. Amen
