“Still, he must be reckoned with, a most wise God who knows what he’s doing. He can call down catastrophe. He’s a God who does what he says. He intervenes in the work of those who do wrong….” –Isaiah 31:2 (The Message)
Lexi is getting better at ignoring passing bikes and cars. She knows what I want her to do: look away and turn her attention on me. But her first impulse is always to lunge and bark. I have to intervene as soon as I spot a distraction and verbally cue Lexi to “Leave it.” If I act quickly enough, she can obey. If I don’t intervene, she’ll try to chase instead. She knows the right thing to do, but she can’t quite do it on her own. We Christians can’t always do the right thing on our own, either. Fortunately, God intervenes to prevent us from doing wrong. We hear his voice in our hearts. We might ignore his voice at first, the way Lexi used to ignore my commands. Then eventually we learn to listen. When temptation comes, God’s Spirit intervenes to help us do the right thing.
Dear God, Intervene when I begin to do wrong and help me do what is right. Amen
