Zigging and Zagging

“If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” --Proverbs 2:4-5

When Lexi scents something on our morning walk, she doesn’t make a beeline for it. Instead she sniffs along the ground in a zigzag pattern, moving back and forth across the grass, searching. She even doubles back and goes in circles. Maybe her sense of smell isn’t keen enough to hone in on a scent right away. Or maybe she’s simply being thorough before settling on the right spot. She doesn’t give up, though, until she’s found what she’s searching for. Like Lexi, we don’t usually make a beeline for God. We zig and we zag. We move back and forth from dogma to creed, searching. We even go in circles sometimes. Maybe we have trouble honing in on the Truth. Maybe we’re just being thorough before settling on what’s right. The prophet Amos warned the Israelites, “People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it” (8:12). But Proverbs assures us that if we don’t give up we will find our way to God. We don’t have to make a beeline, we just have to get there.

Dear God, Bless my zigging and my zagging and all my searching that I might find my way to you. Amen
