A Time for Everything

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” –Ecclesiastes 3:1

Walking Lexi is not a reliable form of exercise for me, but there are often long stretches when she does walk briskly. Then I get some exercise, too. I love it when we’re moving along smoothly like that. We’re in sync. We want it to be like that when we walk with God. We want to move along smoothly, in perfect sync with God’s will. We want to exercise our faith. It’s hard for us to stand still. I used to get so vexed with Lexi when she stopped to sniff, until I made up my mind that it was necessary and good. We may get annoyed with God when he asks us to wait. Sure, we’re grateful that he waits for us. But when we’re eager to go forward, we don’t want to be held back. However, being in sync with God’s will doesn’t always mean moving along smoothly. Sometimes he wants us to wait for reasons of his own that are necessary and good. John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer says, “Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you.” Whatever God’s will for us is, when we do it, we’re walking with him.

Dear God, Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you. Let me exercise my faith or stand still, according to your will. Amen
