“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” --Mark 14:38
When I take Lexi for a walk, I have to watch out for other people, bikes, and dogs sharing the sidewalk. Lexi wants to greet everyone she sees, but not everyone wants to be greeted by a fifty-five-pound bundle of wagging tail and drooling tongue. I have to control Lexi so that she doesn’t rush up to strangers. To that end, I have taught her to step off the sidewalk into the grass and sit until other walkers or runners or cyclists pass by. When we walk in faith, we have to watch out for the temptations that cross our path. We know that we shouldn’t rush into temptation, but it's so hard to control our impulses. We have to learn to step aside and let the tempter pass by. We don’t sit like my dog does; we pray. My dog wants to be good, but she needs my guidance to help her. We want to be good, too, but we need God’s grace to help us.
Dear God, Help me watch out for temptation, and teach me to stand aside and pray until it passes by. Amen
